People living near green spaces may have fewer health problems, especially depression and anxiety than those who live in areas surrounded by cement, according to a study conducted in the Netherlands.

Research Medical Center, VU University Amsterdam, conducted in more than 300,000 adults and Dutch children found that those who live near the "green spaces" tend to have lower rates of 15 different diseases.

found that this association was particularly clear in regard to depression and anxiety, suggesting that a respite from stress and bustle of urban life can be an important reason to benefit from green spaces.

Previous studies have shown that people living in greener environments tend to have better health at the subjective level.

However, this study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, is the first to use objective data on specific diagnoses of mental and physical health, said Dr. Jolanda Maas told Reuters Health .

The data are based on the fact green spaces that have a positive effect on health and is " more than just a luxury " said Maas.

She and her colleagues collected data from electronic medical records of 345,143 patients in approximately 200 family physicians, and used a terrain database to estimate the green spaces in neighborhoods.
